One of the biggest reasons I would think for a government agency are for applications where you need to exchange data/information/services with third parties, vendors, public and other government agencies. Instead of building proprietary interfaces you can use the cloud for physical as well as service integration in a very cost effective and scalable manner.

The wise use of government funds that are derived in part or in the entirety from taxes would be paramount. The common sense approach to using cloud hosting solutions will reduce wasteful spending through the use of existing technology. The best choices in software development or systems development are those that positively affect the bottom line and reduce long term costs such as entitlements.
